Ingredients
Scale
- 8 large leaves of iceberg or butter lettuce (washed and dried carefully)
- 8 ounces of sliced roasted turkey breast (preferably nitrate-free)
- 6 slices of thick-cut bacon (cooked until crispy)
- 1 medium ripe tomato, thinly sliced
- 1 ripe avocado, sliced
- 4 slices of sharp cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise (I love using homemade or avocado oil-based mayo)
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for drizzling)
- Fresh herbs like parsley or chives for garnish (optional)
Substitution suggestions: If you don’t have turkey breast on hand, grilled chicken breast works beautifully. For bacon, turkey bacon is a leaner swap, though I always prefer the smoky richness of pork bacon. And if cheddar isn’t your favorite, a slice of provolone or Swiss cheese can add a nice melt.
Instructions
- Begin by preparing your bacon. Lay the slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 15-18 minutes, or until crisp. This method keeps your bacon evenly cooked and hands-free. Once done, transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess fat.
- While the bacon cooks, wash and dry your lettuce leaves thoroughly. I like iceberg for its crunch, but butter lettuce adds a lovely softness. Dry leaves are essential to prevent sogginess later on.
- In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard together. This simple sauce brings a creamy tang that ties all the flavors in the wrap. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Lay out your lettuce leaves on a clean surface. Spread a thin layer of the mayo-mustard sauce over each leaf—it acts as a tasty barrier between the meat and the lettuce.
- Layer the turkey slices evenly over the dressed lettuce, followed by two slices of bacon on each. Next, add a slice or two of tomato and avocado. If you’re using cheese, fold it in here.
- Drizzle a little olive oil over the fillings and sprinkle with fresh herbs if you like. This adds brightness and a touch of elegance I remember Mama Lou always insisted on, even for the simplest meals.
- Carefully fold the lettuce around the fillings to create a wrap. If needed, use a toothpick to hold everything together.
- Serve immediately for the best texture. The crunch of the lettuce combined with creamy avocado and smoky bacon is something I look forward to every time I make these.
