Ingredients
- 6 ounces high-quality dark chocolate (60-70% cacao), chopped
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional, for added sweetness)
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 1 cup fresh raspberries
- 1 cup fresh blackberries
- Optional: crushed nuts (like toasted almonds or hazelnuts) for garnish
If you don’t have heavy cream, whole milk or half-and-half can substitute, though the texture will be a bit lighter. For the chocolate, feel free to swap dark for semi-sweet or even milk chocolate if you prefer a sweeter dip. And if berries aren’t in season, sliced bananas or chunks of apple work beautifully too—Mama Lou always said, “Use what the earth offers lovingly.”
Instructions
- Chop the dark chocolate into small, even pieces to ensure smooth melting.
- In a small saucepan over low heat, warm the heavy cream until it just begins to simmer. Watch carefully so it doesn’t boil over.
- Remove the cream from heat and add the chopped chocolate. Let it sit for a minute to soften, then gently stir until smooth and glossy.
- Add the unsalted butter and vanilla extract, stirring until the butter melts completely and the mixture is silky.
- If you prefer a sweeter fondue, stir in the honey or maple syrup to taste.
- Transfer the chocolate mixture to a fondue pot or a small heatproof bowl set over a tealight or warm water to keep it melted.
- Wash and prepare your berries, arranging them on a pretty plate or platter.
- Invite your favorite person to gather around, grab a skewer or fork, and start dipping those luscious berries into the warm chocolate.
- For an added touch, sprinkle crushed nuts over the dipped berries for a delightful crunch.
- Savor slowly, share stories, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being together.
When I make this fondue, I always recall Mama Lou’s gentle voice saying, “Good food feeds the body, but shared food feeds the soul.” It’s a reminder that these moments are about connection as much as flavor.
