Learn how to make delicious Festive Cranberry and Pecan Cheese Ball Recipe. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries, chopped
  • 1/2 cup pecans, chopped and toasted
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange zest
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Crackers or sliced baguette, for serving

If you don’t have dried cranberries on hand, tart dried cherries or golden raisins make lovely substitutes, adding their own unique sweetness. For the pecans, walnuts or almonds work beautifully if you prefer a different nutty crunch. And if you want to make this recipe dairy-free, you can swap out the cream cheese and cheddar for plant-based alternatives, though I recommend sticking with the classic dairy for that rich, indulgent feel reminiscent of Mama Lou’s kitchen.

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and shredded cheddar cheese. Use a hand mixer or sturdy spoon to blend until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, orange zest, and salt. Mix well to evenly distribute all the flavors. The orange zest always reminds me of Mama Lou’s kitchen—there was something about that bright citrus scent that made everything feel festive.
  3. Fold in the chopped dried cranberries gently, saving a small handful for garnish.
  4. Place a large piece of plastic wrap on the counter and scoop the cheese mixture onto it. Shape it into a ball using your hands, then wrap tightly and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight if possible. I learned this chilling step from Ouma, who swore by letting the flavors marry overnight for the best taste.
  5. While the cheese ball chills, toast the pecans in a dry skillet over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently until fragrant and lightly browned. Let them cool.
  6. Once chilled, unwrap the cheese ball and roll it in the toasted pecans, pressing gently so the nuts stick evenly all over the surface.
  7. Sprinkle the reserved dried cranberries over the top for a festive pop of color.
  8. Serve with your favorite crackers or sliced baguette, and watch it disappear at your next holiday gathering!
