Learn how to make delicious Easter M&M cookies. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (you can swap half for whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (Mama Lou always said, “Butter is the heart of a good cookie!”)
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (farm-fresh if you can get them—Ouma swears they make a difference)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups Easter-themed M&Ms (feel free to use regular M&Ms or even mini chocolate chips)
  • Optional: ½ cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts), if you like a little crunch

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. This step always reminds me of how Mama Lou prepared her kitchen with care, making sure everything was just right before the magic began.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. I like to imagine Ouma and I sneaking tastes of the flour mixture, even though it’s just dry ingredients—it’s part of the fun!
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. This usually takes about 3 to 4 minutes with an electric mixer. The smell of the brown sugar and butter blending always brings me back to those cozy afternoons in Mama Lou’s kitchen.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, making sure each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract. I remember Ouma insisting that vanilla was the secret ingredient that made everything taste richer and more comforting.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined. Overmixing can make cookies tough, so I always remind myself of Mama Lou’s advice: “Treat the dough like a friend, gently.”
  6. Fold in the Easter M&Ms and nuts if using. I love saving a handful of M&Ms to press on top of each cookie before baking—it makes the colors pop and looks so inviting.
  7. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow for spreading.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden but the centers still look soft. The cookies will firm up as they cool.
  9. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. I often share this moment with Ouma, sipping tea and admiring our handiwork before the first bite.
