Ingredients
- 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped (adjust to taste)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Substitution tips: If you want to make this dip a little lighter, you can swap the sour cream for Greek yogurt. For a milder version, use a smaller jalapeno or substitute with a poblano pepper. If fresh cranberries aren’t available, frozen ones work beautifully—just thaw and drain excess liquid before use.
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine the cranberries, sugar, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the mixture thickens, about 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool completely.
- While the cranberry mixture cools, finely chop the jalapeno. Be careful to remove the seeds if you prefer less heat. I always do this step with Ouma—she handles the chopping while I stir the pot, and we joke that the heat from the pepper is nothing compared to the heat from our holiday cooking marathons!
- In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, lime juice, salt, and black pepper. Use a hand mixer or whisk to blend until smooth and creamy.
- Fold the cooled cranberry mixture and chopped jalapeno into the cream cheese blend. Stir gently to combine all the flavors evenly.
- Transfer the dip to a serving bowl, cover, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld.
- Before serving, sprinkle chopped cilantro on top for a fresh, vibrant touch—Mama Lou always said, “A little green goes a long way.”
This dip is so simple, yet every step feels like a little ritual—a dance between sweet and spicy, creamy and tart. I remember one Christmas Eve when Ouma and I whipped up this dip in the kitchen, our laughter filling the room, knowing that this would become a new family favorite.
