Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices of thick-cut white or brioche bread (brioche adds a lovely buttery texture)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter or almond butter (optional for a nutty twist)
- 1 cup mini marshmallows (or regular marshmallows cut into smaller pieces)
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks
- 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (for drizzling)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
- Cooking spray or additional butter for greasing
Substitution tips: If you prefer gluten-free options, use your favorite gluten-free bread. For a dairy-free version, swap butter for coconut oil and choose dairy-free chocolate chips. You can also experiment with different nut butters or leave them out if you’re allergic or prefer a classic s’mores flavor.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with butter or cooking spray.
- Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out hearts from each slice of bread. If you don’t have a cutter, you can carefully cut hearts freehand with a sharp knife—this always reminds me of how Mama Lou would let me be “the artist” in her kitchen, even if my cuts were a little messy.
- Spread about 1 tablespoon of softened butter evenly on one side of each heart-shaped bread slice. On the non-buttered side, spread a thin layer of peanut butter or almond butter if using. This adds a subtle, creamy depth that Ouma and I adore.
- Sprinkle a generous handful of chocolate chips or chunks over the nut butter layer. Then, top the chocolate with mini marshmallows, making sure they cover the surface evenly.
- Place the hearts on the prepared baking sheet, marshmallow side up.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, watching closely. You want the marshmallows to puff up and turn a golden brown, but not burn. The smell filling your kitchen at this moment will remind you of those summer campfire nights with Mama Lou, full of warmth and simple pleasures.
- Remove from the oven carefully and drizzle with honey or maple syrup. Add a light dusting of powdered sugar if desired.
- Let the toast cool for 2 minutes to set slightly, then serve warm. This is the perfect moment to share a smile or a story, just like Ouma and I do every time we make this together.
