Ingredients
Scale
Here’s what you’ll need to recreate this comforting dish:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 ounces of your favorite pasta (I love using penne or rotini)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
If you’re looking for substitutions, you can easily swap ground turkey for the beef, or use gluten-free pasta if needed. The beauty of this recipe is its adaptability to fit your dietary needs or preferences.
Instructions
- Begin by cooking the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Mama Lou always said this step is where the magic begins.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until it’s browned and cooked through, about 7-8 minutes.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully.
- Mix the cooked pasta into the sauce, ensuring every piece is well-coated. This was always Ouma’s favorite part, stirring the pot and watching the ingredients come together.
- Transfer the pasta mixture to a baking dish, sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for about 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with fresh basil before serving, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy the comforting taste that brings back those warm family memories.
