Ingredients
Scale
- 12 ounces of your favorite pasta (such as penne or fusilli)
- 2 cups broccoli florets
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Zest and juice of 1 lemon
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil or parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Start by bringing a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. About two minutes before the pasta is done, add the broccoli florets to the pot. This way, they’ll cook perfectly together. Drain and set aside, reserving a cup of the pasta water.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. If you like a hint of spice, toss in the red pepper flakes.
- Add the cooked pasta and broccoli to the skillet, tossing to coat in the garlic oil. Gradually add the reserved pasta water, a few tablespoons at a time, until the pasta is well-coated and the sauce reaches your desired consistency.
- Stir in the Parmesan cheese, lemon zest, and juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Transfer to serving bowls and sprinkle with fresh basil or parsley. Serve immediately, perhaps with a story of your own family kitchen adventures.
