Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 6 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: 1/4 cup pickles, diced
Feel free to adjust the cheese to your liking—Ouma would often say there’s no such thing as too much cheese! If you’re looking for a twist, consider substituting ground turkey for beef, or adding a sprinkle of smoked paprika for an extra layer of flavor.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add the diced onion and garlic to the skillet and sauté until the onions become translucent.
- Stir in the cooked bacon, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well and remove from heat.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream until combined.
- Spread the beef mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish. Pour the egg and cream mixture over the top, ensuring it covers the beef evenly.
- Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the casserole. If using pickles, add them now for a tangy touch.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is set and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
One of my favorite tips from Mama Lou was to let the casserole rest for a bit before serving. This not only enhances the flavors but also makes it easier to slice and serve.
