Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 egg, beaten, for egg wash
Feel free to substitute fresh basil for parsley or try a mix of your favorite herbs to personalize the flavor. The key is to keep the balance between the herbs and garlic just right, ensuring each bite is a delightful experience.
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter and yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. This was always my favorite part as a child, feeling the dough transform under my hands.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough is rising, prepare the filling by mixing parsley, garlic, oregano, black pepper, and olive oil in a small bowl.
- Once risen, punch down the dough to release air and roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface.
- Spread the herb and garlic mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a small border at the edges.
- Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces.
- Place the rolls, cut side up, in a greased baking dish. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes until puffy.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Brush the tops of the rolls with beaten egg for a glossy finish.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. The smell will remind you of warm family gatherings.
