Learn how to make delicious Cranberry Orange Sauce. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries (about 3 cups)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (about 2 large oranges)
  • Zest of 1 large orange (avoid the white pith for bitterness)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (optional, but adds warmth)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for depth of flavor)
  • Pinch of salt (to balance the sweetness)

If fresh cranberries aren’t available, frozen cranberries work beautifully—just thaw them slightly before cooking. For a lower-sugar option, you can swap half the sugar with honey or maple syrup, but remember to taste as you go. Sometimes, Ouma and I would sneak a drizzle of honey into the pot, thinking it was our own secret twist inspired by Mama Lou’s flexibility in the kitchen.

Instructions

  1. Rinse the fresh cranberries under cold water and pick out any stems or soft berries.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, orange juice, and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Add the cranberries, orange zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt to the saucepan. Stir to combine.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for about 10-15 minutes. You’ll notice the cranberries start to pop and break down, releasing their natural pectin which thickens the sauce.
  5. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and to check the sauce’s thickness. If you prefer a chunkier texture, simmer less; for a smoother sauce, cook a bit longer.
  6. Once thickened to your liking, remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract if using. This little touch adds a lovely warmth that reminds me of evenings spent with Mama Lou and Ouma, sipping tea and sharing stories.
  7. Allow the sauce to cool at room temperature—it will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm or chilled, depending on your preference.
