This quick and easy recipe is perfect for busy mornings, brunch gatherings, or a comforting weekend indulgence.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 2-3 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

French Toast Bites

  • 4 thick slices of slightly stale white bread (1″/2.5cm thick)
  • 2 large eggs (or 3 small eggs)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 tbsp butter (separated)

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder

To Serve

  • Maple syrup (not optional!)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Bread
Cut the thick slices of stale white bread into small bite-sized cubes. Using stale bread helps absorb the custard without becoming too soggy.

  • Make the Custard Mixture
In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt until fully combined. This mixture will give the French toast bites their creamy texture.

  • Soak the Bread
Add the bread cubes into the custard mixture, tossing gently to coat. Let them sit for about 1 minute so they absorb the flavors.

  • Cook the Bites
Heat 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add half of the soaked bread cubes in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Repeat with the remaining butter and bread cubes.

  • Coat with Cinnamon Sugar
In a shallow bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon. While the French toast bites are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.

  • Serve and Enjoy
Transfer the coated bites to a serving plate and generously drizzle with maple syrup. Serve immediately while warm and crispy!

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread: Fresh bread can become too soft and fall apart in the custard. If your bread is fresh, let it sit out for a few hours before using.
  • Alternative bread options: Brioche, challah, or even sourdough can be used for a richer flavor.
  • Make it healthier: Swap white bread for whole wheat, use a sugar substitute, or opt for almond milk instead of dairy.

  • Storage tips: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or toaster oven to maintain crispiness.
