Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
- 1 cup cooked ham, diced
- 1 1/2 cups Swiss cheese, shredded
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
For a gluten-free option, you can substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend and use gluten-free breadcrumbs. Feel free to experiment with different cheeses, like Gruyère or cheddar, for a unique twist on this classic dish.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the flour and milk, whisking constantly until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes. Add in the Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt, and pepper, and stir well.
- In the prepared baking dish, layer the shredded chicken and diced ham. Pour the sauce over the top, ensuring the meat is evenly coated.
- Sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese over the casserole, spreading it evenly.
- In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs with the melted butter and mix until the crumbs are coated. Sprinkle this mixture over the cheese layer.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
