Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon mustard powder
- 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
If you’re looking to switch things up, you can substitute the ground beef with ground turkey for a lighter version. Mozzarella cheese can be used in place of cheddar for a different flavor profile, while gluten-free pasta makes it a suitable option for those with dietary restrictions.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This is the perfect time to reminisce about those family gatherings while you prepare your ingredients.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until fragrant and translucent, about 3 minutes. Mama Lou always said that the secret to a good dish is in the aroma of sautéed onions and garlic.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, cooking until browned. Break it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks, ensuring even browning.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, ketchup, smoked paprika, and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully.
- While the beef mixture simmers, cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the beef mixture with the cooked macaroni. Stir in half of the shredded cheddar cheese, ensuring everything is well combined.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Top with the remaining cheddar cheese, spreading it evenly over the casserole.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. This is where the magic happens, as the flavors meld together to create something truly special.
- Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving. This gives you a moment to reflect on the joy of sharing a meal with loved ones, much like we did in Mama Lou’s kitchen.
