Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey for a leaner option)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup homemade ketchup (or tomato sauce)
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp butter (for toasting buns)
- 4 soft hamburger buns
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it apart as it browns.
- When the beef is halfway done, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook until the meat is fully browned and the onions are soft (about 5-7 minutes).
- Drain any excess fat, then stir in homemade ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- While the filling is simmering, toast the hamburger buns in a separate skillet with butter.
- Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture generously onto each bun and serve immediately.
Notes
- For a healthier version, swap ground beef for ground turkey and use whole wheat buns.
- The filling can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
- Serve with coleslaw, baked beans, or potato chips for a complete meal.
